Digital Storytelling: Visionary Entrepreneurs

What do entrepreneurs do to be successful? What sets the great ones apart? Have you ever thought about what personality characteristics many great entrepreneurs of the world have in common?

Below I’ve used digital storytelling through Adobe Spark to highlight just one of the characteristics I think is important for any great entrepreneur to possess. Throughout this unit I have continued to stress the importance of having a strong vision for your companies and yourselves as budding entrepreneurs. In this video, I provide one example of a great entrepreneur who had a strong vision and was able to launch a successful company and forward-thinking brand.

For this upcoming assignment, I’d like you to create your own digital story about an entrepreneur of your choosing. In your story, you need to focus on one characteristic that this person exemplifies. Some example characteristics are: passion, creativity, perseverance, etc. I’ve included a few resources to help generate ideas. Your videos will need to be 2 to 4 minutes in length, and will need to include photos, narration, and music. We’ll discuss the rubric and the technical aspects of this assignment during our next class.

Digital storytelling has a variety of uses. Many businesses are utilizing storytelling to help sell their products, by appealing to customers emotions. This could be an option for your final project when you’re developing your promotional items. You could create a digital story to show to potential investors, or as a part of your website.

By participating in this assignment you’ll have an opportunity to utilize the technology and we’ll all learn about the different entrepreneurs you all choose to highlight.

Please be sure to read through the attached articles and watch the video before our next class. See you then!

Canva.com Business Cards

Hello class and welcome to another blog post.

Today I’d like you to watch my tutorial about creating a business card on Canva.com, which is at the bottom of this blog post. This is important because you will be creating your own to accompany your business plan.

You might be wondering, what’s the purpose of creating a business card?

Well business cards can be a valuable marketing tool. Entrepreneurs hand out their business cards as they network with different individuals potentially through trade shows, conventions, and networking events. They also hand them out when they meet people randomly. A business card is like a snap shot of what your business is all about. It contains basic information about your business, which should include the name of the business, your name if that’s different, usually something about what the business does, and basic contact information such as phone number, email address, website or social media. By providing this information potential customers have a way to get in contact with you about your product or service. When considering your design, business cards should reflect the style of your business and should represent your brand. This could include your logo and if you have a tag line.

Another great benefit of business cards is the cost. Business cards are a cost effective promotional item and there are a lot of businesses that offer printing such as Vistaprint.com, moo.com, and most of your local office supply stores like Office Depot. Costs are always a consideration, so getting low cost promotional items is always a plus, and business cards a great way to do that.

Please be sure to watch this prior to coming to our next class. This way when you start working on your business cards in class you’ll be ready to dive right in. We’ll go over the rubric for this assignment in class before we get started.

I’ve also included some links for additional resources on elements of a business card and somethings to consider. I’ve also found a post with some really creative business cards that are just some food for thought, something to consider later on in your careers and ways to differentiate yourself from the competition. Business cards, if creatively done, can really help you stick out in a sea of traditional business cards, especially if you’re traveling to trade shows and conventions. They’re pretty fun to look at too!

Class Podcast

Hello Class! Here is our first podcast. I’m starting off with highlighting a business I found called Freestyle Language Center. Below you’ll find the links I reference during the podcast. As budding entrepreneurs, it’s important that you’re getting exposed to the new businesses sprouting up every day. There is much to gain from learning from others and as you venture through your journey of creating your own business you can get some great experience putting a spotlight on businesses you find interesting and innovative.

After listening to this podcast I’d like you research a business in your community and surrounding areas. This business needs to be fairly new, something started within the last 1-3 years. Each of you will then script and record your own podcast! You can be as innovative and creative as you want in the way you create your podcast. You’re welcome to work with a partner or in a small group of three, but each person needs to be heard on the podcast. Your podcast can be in the form of an interview or straight description similar to what I did, or you can be as creative as you like. Your podcast should be approximately 3 to 7 minutes long. During our next class period I’ll be handing out the rubric and further instructions on this assignment. I just want you to get your minds working on some ideas and begin researching so you can hit the ground running the next time we meet. We’ll go over the technology aspect when we’re in class together.

Creating this podcast will be good practice and experience to help prepare you for when you’ll need to create a promotional item for your larger project of creating your own products. Creating a podcast could be one way you could promote your product.

What’s your side hustle?

side hustleI came across a podcast I think you all would all be interested in. It’s called Side Hustle School. In this podcast, the host, Chris Guillebeau describes what he calls side hustles, which is a small business idea that someone was able to create while they were still working a full-time job or in school and make some extra side cash. In this specific episode, the host describes a business idea that was created based on 365-day photo project that was used to transition into tutorials to help other small business owners how to create videos that they can use on their smartphones.

Side hustles speak to the entrepreneurial spirit, in which regular people are recognizing opportunities to create a business from things they come across in their daily lives, and through their hobbies and passions. New business ideas can be simple and can be started right from a person’s home.

Vision Statements

Hey Team!

I really enjoyed our lesson on writing Vision Statements today! Below I’ve listed some key reminders about writing your vision statements for your businesses. I have also attached the video we watched in class for reference. If you’re looking for additional examples to help you get inspired read 30 Examples Vision Statements. They have some great examples of visions statements that vary in length and topic.

  • Vision statements provide the details of where your company is going in the future and why.
  • They can help investors, potential employees, and customers to understand where your business is headed and what you plan to accomplish.
  • Remember your statement need to be concise, we want to inspire, and you definitely want to make it memorable.
  • The length should be kept to one sentence, but there is no specific number of words. It can be as little as three words, as long as it gets to the core of where your company is going.

Brainstorming business ideas

Welcome to our class blog!

For my first post, I’d like to continue our conversation about generating your business ideas. Below are some tips and additional resources to get your ideas flowing.

brainstorming

Here are 10 tips I’ve gathered to help you brainstorm:

  1. Have a place to write down your ideas. A journal works well for this. Keep it with you when you’re out so you always have a place to jot down your thoughts and ideas. Nothings worse than coming up with something great and then forgetting what it was because you didn’t write it down.
  2. Take a look at your hobbies, interests, and passions. Lots of people are able to come up with business ideas from the things they already love doing.
  3. Get out into your community. You know what you might come across observing other people interreacting with each other and the world.
  4. Be observant. You never know when an idea could be just around the corner or right in front of your face.
  5. Take a look at existing products. Is there something that bugs you about it? Can you make it better?
  6. Examine separate existing products and look at the possibility of combining products to create something new and improved.
  7. Allow yourself to imagine something completely new and different. It’s okay to be original.
  8. Talk it out. You can use your friends and family as resources. Getting feedback on your ideas can help to generate a more solid idea.
  9. Change your routine or setting. Somethings this can help you to generate ideas.
  10. Learn or read about something new.
